“People from Detroit have soul,” a friend told me when I said how much I love this festival and her city. They do! And they genuinely love music. The venue, the crowd, the variety of artists and quality of performances all contribute to making Movement a special event in the calendar, and this year’s 10th edition unanimously ranked as one of the most memorable.
I managed to catch all or part of the following acts: Sonja Moonear, Guti, Zip, Seth Troxler, Stacey Pullen, Juan Atkins, Maceo Plex, Four Tet, Kraftwerk, Caribou, Job Jobse, Lee Curtis, Matador, Heidi, Shaun Reeves, The Black Madonna, Ame, Adam Beyer, Anja Schneider, Joseph Capriati, John Digweed, Chris Liebing, Guy Gerber, Modeselektor, Nina Kravitz. Almost everyone I saw was so good that it is hard to narrow down to a top list.
Zip at the Beatport stage definitely stands out as one of the best set of the 3 days. As my friend and music aficionado Judy described it, “he dropped dope tracks with a sprinkling of funky breakbeat here and there to keep my feet moving non-stop.” We couldn’t pull ourselves away to check out anyone else! Her other favorite acts included Job Jobse at the Beatport stage – “He has a knack for always building an impressive musical journey of tracks! It kept me dancing in the blazing sun even though his set time was early and the crowd was sparse!” Someone said of Kraftwerk at the main stage: “What an inspirational melding of music and art on a stage. No words for the beautifully calculated timing of 3D images and sound.”
I personally enjoyed Monday evening the best. I was happy to catch the end of Anja Schneider as I had never seen her before. Joseph Capriati and John Digweed and later Chris Liebing and Guy Gerber all delivered amazing sets, making it hard to leave one for the other. Last but not least, we still managed to muster the energy for Modeselektor and the last few minutes of Nina Kravitz.
Alongside the main festival, Tresor 25 Years after party at the Tangent Gallery literally blew me away. The lineup, venue, sound, everything was on point and it was such a treat to be on a dance floor where everyone was so focused on the music and hardly talking!
